Artist Statement

My photography is based on visual exploration. Growing up in a rural area, I spent time alone using my imagination to explore my two-acre backyard. Spending time observing allowed me to develop an eye for my surroundings, which followed me into my art-making.

Much of my photo work involves locations in small towns during the day and at night. A large focus in my practice is the effect light and time of day has on a scene, and how it changes everything. Seeing these scenes only illuminated by street lamps changes the very nature of the place, which would look completely different in the daytime.

Working primarily digitally, I use deliberate compositions that cause the common scene to appear unfamiliar. My experience exploring as a child allowed me to look where others may not look. I strive to use my artistic vision to create photographs that allow the viewer to question what they are actually seeing.
